Grand Event Cruises:

To mark the 175th anniversary of the formation of the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company P&O Cruises will be celebrating in style with all seven ships of the fleet together in their home port of Southampton on the same day, 3rd July 2012. Passengers have the opportunity to be part of this spectacular event by joining one of the seven Grand Event cruises, all departing on the evening of the 3rd July 2012. Leaving their berths on this historic day, the ships’ passengers and their crew will enjoy a Sailaway champagne party on deck, a special 175 gala dinner, Heritage art display, special speakers, Grand Event commemorative gift, Heritage presentations and a World Cruise prize draw. Every passenger (over the age of 17) sailing on each Grand Event cruise will be eligible to win one of seven P&O Cruises 2013 World Cruises. One draw will take place during each Grand Event cruise.

P&O Cruises offers the greatest choice of ex-UK cruises, sailing 146 roundtrip cruises from Southampton in 2012. Popular demand from passengers has led to an increase in our Northern European cruises throughout summer and winter programmes (on both Aurora and Oriana). More breadth has been introduced into Azura’s 2012 programme with her sailing ex UK cruises from March to December, offering a mix of cruises including a 24 night maiden Black Sea cruise and a maiden 24 night Caribbean cruise. Olly Smith, said: “The Glass House really is a must for both wine lovers and for those who are dipping their toes into the wonderful world of wines for the very first time. The Glass House menu features different wines recommended with each course, all served by the glass. I am thrilled to say that the fleet house wines we blended have recently received the commended award from the Decanter World Wine Awards 2010 and the Porta Palo white wine also received a commended award from the International wine and spirits competition 2010.

“I have made several trips on board so far and have some planned for the rest of the year too. It has been great to chat to passengers and hear their feedback on The Glass House, host some fun wine tasting sessions and also to enjoy a glass of wine, or two, with the new friends I have been making at sea.”

Passengers are able to order ‘wine flights’ in The Glass House. A wine flight consists of three 125ml glasses of different wines so that passengers can sample wines they have not tried before, compare different wines and learn more about wine and concepts of wine tasting. The wine flights have been designed by Olly Smith. There are seven flights and each one has a different theme, for example luxury wines, wines from classic wine growing regions, wines from new wine growing regions, and Olly’s favourite wines.

The Glass House has a state of the art Enomatic wine system which enables passengers to try wines by the glass rather than having to buy an entire bottle. A bottle can be opened, then preserved by using revolutionary inert gas so it does not react to the oxygen in the air allowing the flavours and characteristics of the wide range of selected vintages to remain intact, as if the bottle had just been opened and therefore able to be enjoyed by many.

Ever tasted a wine from Canada before? Peller Icewine Cuvée is blended from the juice of naturally frozen grapes that have been picked in the middle of a cold Canadian winter. A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir honey coated fizz with subtle richness and a surprisingly dry finish.

Beblenheim Gewurztraminer Dom Trapet 2005, Alsace, France

Flamboyant, fun and unmistakable! This wine smells of orangey marmalade with lemon Turkish delight, elderflower and lychee floating around like an air display of tropical fruits. Off-dry with luscious fruit and some proper zing to balance.

Alois Lageder Biodynamic Chardonnay/Pinot Grigio 2008 Italy

Pinot Grigio is very popular with us Brits, but this is Pinot Grigio like no other. It’s so delicious and accomplished it deserves a knighthood – rich, pure, creamy, complex, layered and excellent.

Château Sainte Marguerite Grande Reserve Rosé 2008, Provence, France

There is no drink that says “holiday” quite as much as a cool glass of rosé. And this is not just any old rosé. This is an absolute stonker. It’s all about floral aromas (think roses) and strawberry freshness. It comes from Provence, made from organic grapes and feels like pure summertime in a glass.

Perez Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Maipo Valley, Chile

Seriously packed with blackcurrant fruitiness and a lively minty streak, it’s fleshy, smooth and generous mouthful of yum!

Some 150+ cruises later I have collected many bits of memorabilia along the way. With the launch of Azura asking for the loan of P&O memorabilia it has sent me looking back at some of the items I have collected along the way, and I thought the following might be of interest to some.

Here is an original brochure from 1966 listing all of the cruises for 1967 with prices. At the time P&O Orient Lines offices were at 26 Cockspur Street, SW1 and the telephone number was listed as Whithall 4444. Its my bet that they didnt have that repetative ‘on hold’ music back in the day or the list of 7 differnt options to press before being put on hold to speak to the person that you wanted to get through to.

I have found an idylic sounding cruise that I wouldnt mind booking.

Caneberra 11th August 1967

16nights Mediterranean. Southampton, Athens, Istanbul, Alexandria, Palma, southampton – Perfect with just four ports of call and the rest sea days!

And the Price? First class from £195 and tourist Class from £109 (I wonder if passengers asked for discount back in the day?)

The cheapest 2 week cruise I can find was on the Himalaya 1st July 1967 with fares from only £84 (I have shoes costing more than that!)

Or how do you fancy 22 days Caribbean cruise on Chusan 28th October 1967? Fares from £209 for first Class and from £149 for Tourist class

Deposit - Just £2 per adult at time of booking with a 10% depsoit becoming payable by 31st October 1966. For bookings after 31st October a 10% deposit is required.

Southampton Port Charges – An embarkation and disembarkation charge of £1 13s 0d, levied by the Port Authorities is payable by all passengers.

Cancellations -  In the event of a cancellationof booking made before 1st October the reservation fee of £2 per adult will not be refunded. in the event of a cancellation of bookings made on or after 1st October, where a deposit or passage ticket has been issued a service charge of £2 per adult will be made. (I like the next bit) There will be no service charge on any change of cruise or accomodation within the 1967 programme.

Insurance cover is offered at 10/- per person irrespective of the fare.

The great thing is that P&O also seemed to guarantee sunshine!! “No holiday is more certain of sunshine than a P&O Orient Cruise. Because the ships go where the sun is; and out there at sea there’s nothing but you, blue sky and blue water. Deck space to sprawl on, deck chairs, and sea breazes or swimming pool to cool off in.”

Oh those were the days!!!!

Mix together Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar, chic sophisticated surroundings and a menu of sublime and intriguing flavours and you have Sindhu – one of Azura’s enticing Select Dining restaurants. Celebrating Britain’s love affair with Indian cuisine and P&O Cruises long standing affiliation with India, this fine dining venue will offer contemporary Indian cuisine with a British twist.

Atul is very proud of Sindhu – his very first restaurant at sea – and excited about the planning and preparation involved. He has just finished creating the mouth watering menus, which include classic spice-infused dishes such as Crab Masala with Crab Claws and Vermicelli Biriyani. He is also working with the P&O Cruises team to develop the menu designs and table settings as well as taking time to train each of the chefs who will be working there.

Sommeliers from Atul’s London based restaurant, Benares, will be helping to develop Sindhu’s wine list, matching vintages with the menus. Plus they will also be creating the fruity, Indian-inspired cocktails that will also be served in the bar.
