Occasionally I am very privileged to be invited to some exclusive events onboard my favourite ships in Southampton, and yesterday was no exception. I had been invited to a Masterclass with Atul Kochhar onboard P&O Azura in his signature restaurant at sea, Sindhu.

I had a bit of a painful start to my day as I arrived at Ocean Terminal. At around 10.15am just as many of the passengers were arriving via taxi for the start of their 14 night Mediterranean cruise. Why was it painful? Well they were getting out of their taxis, the porters were taking care of their cases and they were walking through the doors to Ocean Terminal with passport in hand ready to check in at the top of the escalator, they might as well have kicked me on the way past! I confess not all of them looked happy. You could tell which ones had slept on the wrong side of the bed, which ones had had words with their other halves about leaving for the dock so early – after all, check in for suite passengers and top tier loyalty members doesn’t usually start until 11.30am. But there was a smiley cheerful man, in a P&O fleece, at the bottom of the gangway to sweep them all up, put a smile on their face and send them up the escalator in a better mood.

At 10.45am our select little group was ready to embark via the crew gangway. Ooh it was chilly on that dockside. Security staff at the foot of the gangway were wrapped up like they were in the Antarctic. Once onboard we had an hour to kill. We checked out the key areas of Azura. I relished the little warm up on the hot stone beds in the Spa area which were greatly appreciated after checking out the Sanctuary in the biting wind. It did turn into a bit of a GoCruisewithJane tour as I taught my hosts things about Azura that they weren’t aware of, such as the Spa treatment rooms with balconies, the funky art work that appears around the ship such as the stocking legs, shirts in the stairwell, vase of flowers outside the ladies facilities, random coats hanging up etc. If you aren’t aware of what I am talking about you will have to come on a GoCruisewithJane tour of Azura sometime!

At Noon it was time to head to Sindhu for our Masterclass. It soon became clear that Atul was delayed, and we were informed that he was stuck in traffic and could be sometime. Never mind, a Benares Cocktail eased the wait. It was lovely, and I think the Benares cocktail has another five new fans. We had a lovely time chatting amongst ourselves and it turned into a very social occasion. Several senior officers dropped by to offer P&O apologies but we were well looked after with wine and some hastily prepared nibbles of lamb samosas. Eventually I had to swap to mineral water and cola which was a bit of a shock to the crew, but I’m not usually driving when I am in an Azura bar! Several chefs seemed to be being called in and at one stage I thought one of them was going to stand in for Atul, but all of a sudden, there he was, the man himself Atul Kochhar had appeared from nowhere, quietly and discreetly, and was stood offering his apologies at the side of the table. No need for apologies, we had all had a nice time.

We were seated right infront of the galley cooking area in Sindhu and Atul explained the origin of Indian cooking before he started his cookery demonstration. I have to say that he de robed a chicken like he was taking off a babys babygrow. How do professional chefs make everything look so effortless? Then he showed us how to portion the whole chicken, but the reality of it is, it isn’t going to be anything like that when I attempt it. His knives must be a zillion times sharper than anything in my kitchen draw that’s for sure. Organisation and preparation seems to be the key. Get everything ready, have it all laid out in front of you, and then start cooking. It sounds logical, but I know in my kitchen its a case of hunt through the kitchen cupboard when you are half way through mixing, packets and tins fall out, into half prepared food and then you find you have to nip out and purchase some key ingredient. I will try taking a leaf out of Atuls book in future. It would also be handy to have a team of immaculate chefs on hand all shouting ‘yes chef’ when required. They clearly all knew him so well as they were one step ahead of him most of the time and were swapping bowls, condiments and spices etc before the instruction was raised. Atul mixed all his own sauces and explained everything in a nice simplistic way for non cooks like myself. We were invited to taste everything as he prepared it. We had a full time spoon swapper employed just behind our right shoulder, which was handy! Watching Atul put the final dish together was a treat, he makes it look such an art. Our magic spoon provider is now supplying knives and forks and we all tuck into the amazing plate of food infront of us. I do feel a bit like John Torode and Gregg Wallace at this point as you try to get a bit of everything on your fork and wait for the individual flavours to hit your palate. I confess I did have a bit of a wobbly moment when Atul produced a couple of soft shell crabs and prepared them with passion fruit chutney. Mr Jelly Crab looked not too appetising to start off with, especially with his claws etc, but Atul explained that the whole dish could be eaten, so I decided to trust him and give it a try. It was delicious, so don’t knock it until you try it!

Atul was fabulous. Despite the stress he must have suffered trying to keep his appointment with us he remained calm and never rushed any process of his Master Class. He posed for photos at the end of the Master Class and was happy to answer the many questions that we threw at him. But our day wasn’t over, despite the clock above the gangway ticking we were invited to dine in Sindhu and we were served a full four course meal plus poppadoms and relish to start, and petit fours to finish, not to mention the 3 baskets of bread selections. The presentation in Sindhu just blows you away. Each dish is explained as you are served, and the Indian fusion is just right for me, as Im not one to indulge in a full blown curry from the High street.

Our menu consisted of:

Crisp Fried Soft Shell crab with Passion Fruit Chutney

KARARA KEKDA

Pan Fried Sea Bass with Coconut Moilly Sauce

MEEN MOILLEY

Tandoori Chicken with Chickpea Salad

BHATT KA MURG AUR KABULI CHANNA CHAT

Mango Panna Cotta with Peppered Strawberries

PANNA COTTA

Our day had really overran from the planned timings, and seeing people prepare for Muster Drill before we had even had desert did set some on edge a little. But I was not leaving without my Panna Cotta, and we were all in agreement that it was worth the risk of sailing to the Mediterranean as stowaways without enough clothes to go between us. But with a bit of mix and matching we decided we could get by for a few days until we reached the first port of call. We didn’t have time for coffee, our escort quite rightly pulled rank on us and said it was time to disembark. Before we left we were all presented with a signed copy of Atuls Curries of the World. I said my Goodbyes to the lovely Viju who had looked after us all afternoon. I don’t think he was expecting ‘Jane the passenger’ to turn up in his restaurant today! Then six ladies fled Sindhu just as Cinderella had done at the stroke of midnight, except we weren’t running for a Pumpkin Coach, we were running for a Gangway! And it was a very close run thing. The shops were already open onboard, the Atrium was buzzing, passengers were starting their holiday, and I wasn’t one of them! Just as we ran down the crew gangway the crane was moving into position to lift the gangway from the side of the ship. Close call!! The ladies in the crew pass office will be pleased to see us!! I could have hung around and waited for Azura to sail, but why torture myself. I had enough of that 2 two days earlier when I stood in the sunshine and waved her off on her two night party cruise. There is only one way to watch a ship sail and that’s from onboard!

There are several Food and Wine themed cruises planned throughout 2013 & 2014 where MasterClasses such as this take place as well as themed shore excursions, special dinners etc. MasterClass with Atul was £75, and he was also hosting a special dining event at £50 per person, including wines, but that particular event was so popular that it was fully booked within the first 30 minutes of passengers embarking, so you have to be quick if you want to take advantage of these events.

For more information about any of the planned Food & Wine themed cruises for 2013 & 2014 contact me on 02746 742135 or email janechadwick@gocruise.co.uk

Dubbed the ‘Master of Spices’, at 31 Atul Kochhar became the first Indian chef to win a Michelin star. Born in Jamshedpur, north east India, Atul trained and worked at the Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi before moving to England. In 1994, he assisted in the opening of ‘Tamarind’ in London and it was here that he achieved his first Michelin star in 2001. In 2003 Atul opened his first restaurant, ‘Benares’, named after the ancient holy city in northern India. In 2007, this restaurant also won a coveted Michelin star.

Since opening his flagship restaurant, Atul has expanded his British empire with a further two; ‘Vatika’ in Hampshire and ‘Ananda’ in Dublin. He is also a familiar face on our television screens, first achieving celebrity status competing against a host of other renowned chefs on the successful series ‘The Great British Menu’. Today, he makes regular appearances on TV’s ‘Saturday Kitchen’ and ‘Market Kitchen’.

Using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, Atul has developed a unique style of cooking. “I practiced what I learnt in India here and then I learnt a lot more here and mixed the two. Some people call it British Indian food, some people call it Indian fusion”. Sindhu celebrates both Britain’s love affair with Indian food and P&O Cruises long standing affiliation with India, bringing you contemporary Indian cuisine with a subtle British twist.

Wednesday 27th February 2013 – Grenada

Oh dear it’s the penultimate day! And due to the timing of going to bed last night it was an early start to the day. Mr C made the tea at about 6.30am this morning – I know, it was early and we are supposed to be on holiday, but things to do, places to go. You know how it is. Two cups of tea later I felt as if I could tackle a bit of packing and by breakfast time Mr C’s case was packed and mine was over half way there.

Breakfast in XVII was all very civilised. Nothing has changed. The menu hasn’t changed and neither have the activities on the lower decks. I sit on the XVII terrace and love watching the activities of others. There are those that have to get a certain sunbed and its the mission of the day. There are those that go out just for a ciggie and its their way of waking up, some that sit and have coffee and others that rock up with their tray laden with 3 courses just because they can. I’m enjoying my toast, I love the fact that the toast is actually hot an edible in XVII. I’m sure it’s the only place on any ship that produces fresh warm toast. I had my fresh orange, my melon drizzled in honey with natural yogurt and a salmon bagel with egg hollandaise. Not that I like egg. Mr Egg always gets hoofed to the side of the plate, because in all my 50 years I don’t like egg yolks.

Back at the Oronsay Suite Deepak was doing his thing and having a tidy around, as he does. He was a star last night so I thanked him. I also took the opportunity to ask him about packing. Do Butlers actually provide the packing service that the brochure and pre cruise literature suggests? Well, it would seem it is the less able that actually request packing and unpacking by a Butler and even then they have to be present to make sure all is as it should be. If for any reason they cannot be present then a second crew member has to be present as a witness. So it is not very often they are called upon for packing and unpacking services. I didn’t want my packing done for me, although that would be a very nice luxury, but I wouldn’t fancy a stranger handling all my bits and bobs.

We ventured ashore with the sole intention of going on the water taxi to Grand Anese Beach and that is exactly what we did. $8 return, payable on the water taxi. We didn’t queue and were straight on the little boat and on our way. Can you believe that I sat next to two ladies that complained they were getting wet. Clue is in the name – water taxi! On arrival at Grande Anse we took the decision to take a right instead of a left at the end of the board walk. The water taxi people always tell you to go left and go see Captain Jack Sparrow for sunbeds and drinks, but we always do that so I fancied being a rebel for once. We took a right and we walked, and we walked, and we walked. In fact we walked all the way to the very end of the beach past about 32 resorts! Well it seemed like it! We never really intended to walk that far but a lady said that it was really nice at that end, but it became too commercial for me, so on arrival at the very end, we turned and walked a third of the way back. Mr C was so relieved when I finally found a sun bed I liked the look of lol. It was a nice pair of sunbeds, nice soft mattresses, nice and quiet and possibly the best rum punch I have had all cruise! I must have found my sea legs today because I kept venturing into the sea all by myself. Anyone that knows me knows that I don’t do sea!! It was nice to sit somewhere completely different on a familiar beach, it enables you to appreciate things from a different angle. The next few hours were pretty much the same, just a loop of rum punch, dip in the sea, natter to the nice ladies next to us, and so on. My day was fully complete when singing man came along and sang two songs to me. One being about a beautiful lady in a white straw hat! No idea who she could be lol. But soon after that we could hear the fat lady singing from the top of Azura funnels. And when the fat lady sings, you just can’t fight it! She was shouting it loud and clear that the cruise was almost over and we had to get back onboard and do boring stuff like immigration forms, luggage tags, packing. Just rubbish stuff! I reluctantly packed up by bag, and walked along the beach dragging my towel behind me. why did the cruise have to be over. I was just getting into it! Plenty of water taxis waiting to take us bag, and scurry around in the bottom of my Mary Poppins bag I was able to locate the return tickets for the water taxi. Phew, nearly had to pay again. It was oh so hot today, so very very very hot. It just made the walk back to the ship even harder.

When we got back onboard we went straight to the tranquillity of the suite and I ran a Jacuzzi. Mr C went out for pizza and for a brief moment I wondered if it would be acceptable to eat pizza in the Jacuzzi. I’m sure you will be impressed to hear that I took the decision to drag myself from the Jacuzzi to the balcony, complete with P&O bathrobe to eat said pizza!

That packing is still niggling at me. Why cant it just finish itself? Do you think Deepak would do it for me if I was desperate lol. I did a bit more but then I decided that I just couldn’t do anymore. I think I might have got too much sun on the beach today. More than likely when we were trekking the full length of the beach, as it was a little too breezy to enable me to wear my sun hat.

I had left myself a choice of outfits for this evening, but if I’m honest I just wanted to curl up in bed with the TV on and a sandwich. Mr C likes to have his glass of wine in Glass House at the start of pre dinner drinks, and I never object to a drink in my favourite Bar. Al was accusing me of leading him astray last night, lol, I can’t think what he means. A final Benares in Sindhu is a must, so we headed there next, before the final dinner in the restaurant. The Restaurant manager and head waiter had missed us last night, but we never really seemed to build a rapport with the waiters this cruise, which is unusual. I wasn’t feeling too great from the effects of the sun, so I was glad when the meal was over Planet Bar was decided upon for our nightcap and I did wonder if I would survive for much longer. We sat in the wing looking down the length of the ship and reminiscing. We even reminisced back to the Grand Event cruise and commented that it would have been a good viewing point for the Grand Event Sailaway. Great idea, pity it was only seven months too late! But oh how we giggled tonight. What we giggled about is not entirely clear, but giggling is a laugh isn’t it.

Back at the suite the cases were haunting me, they just needed the last few items in, the toiletries sorting into a bag for the day room, and a few bits and bobs putting into the hand luggage. But I was no sooner inside the suite door and I started to feel a bit queasy. I was tired, like very tired, which didn’t help. Plus, I had too much sun, and yes I had consumed a sherry or two this evening, so it was all adding up. The more I tried to just sort the cases the poorlier I felt. I just wanted it all to stop now. Take me home, just snap your fingers and put me at my own front door, now this instant! To make matter worse Mr C doesn’t do packing. He goes away a lot for work, but trust him with his own packing and all sorts of disasters occur. But now, at this present moment in time he was going to have to sort it. I may have mentioned this before, but if there is one thing I have noticed about the suite at the aft is that Azura does get a bit of a jiggle on at times. A jiggle is the only way I can describe it really. It’s sort of a fast, sideways jiggly motion. To make matters worse we were in that rough bit of sea, similar to the Bay of Biscay in Barbados, sometimes its a bit bouncy and sometimes it’s nice and smooth. Tonight it was bouncy! So back to the packing, Not only was he going to work out what needed packing, what needed wearing for the beach tomorrow, what needed wearing for the journey home, and what just needed keeping for the day room. But he also needed to read Mr Immigrations notes to see what stickers went where, what to do with security seals, how to apply the airline tags, where to stick the receipts etc. I couldn’t help him. I was curled up in a ball on the pillow space, just wanting home to appear. Somehow, bless him, he managed it. I was fine once the lights were out. I was just tired, very tired! I don’t think that’s the way its supposed to be after a ‘relaxing two week Caribbean cruise is it?

Thursday 28th February 2013 – Barbados

I was awake well before we berthed in Barbados. I confess it was sad to see the dockside and the crane again. Mr C was immediately despatched to do the immigration thing in Manhattan. I have no idea what goes on in there as its Mr C’s job, but he was back in a flash. I thought that was because he had left half of the required paperwork on the desk in the suite, but no we had been immigrated! Royal Caribbean was berthing just as we arrived for our final breakfast in XVII. We had our usual table by the rail, and all below us was pretty much the same as it had been all cruise.

I was keen to get on with our day and just disappear to the beach for a few hours, but I needed to transfer our hand luggage from the suite to the day room that Deepak had booked for us a few days earlier. Now that was a great perk of having a Butler! The queue was horrendous for those that didn’t have a Butler to do these errands, and if you waited for the queue to go down you ended up having to pay more for a higher grade day room. Can’t quite see why P&O charge extra for an obstructed view or outside cabin. I can see the point of charging extra for a balcony day room, but more for a window or obstructed view just seems like an excuse for extra revenue! Anyway, we had our day room booked, but we had to wait for the cabin steward on that section to clean it before we could transfer the bags. P&O want you out of your cabin by 8.30am, but don’t make day rooms available until 10.30am. I was getting a bit agitated as it was messing up my day. I kept patrolling past our inside day cabin, but it wasn’t being touched. No key in the door. We were caught between a rock and a hard place. As it approached 10.30am I think the cabin steward took the hint and started on C712 which was to be our day cabin. Time was up, my bags were going in. I only wanted to store them in the wardrobe area but I don’t think he was too impressed. I asked for a key? No, not until he had finished, but he tried to assure me that the hand luggage would be fine. He suggested I leave it there and he would leave the key in the door. Oh good idea, not! Let all and sundry invite themselves in and rob me of my passports and essentials. I won in the end and the key was granted.

We decided to take a cab to the beach after last weeks 30 mile trek into town lol. Luckily for us there was a mini bus just waiting for two more passengers to fill it, and those two were us. We were into town and on a sun lounger faster than we could have walked to the port gate. I confess that there are more exotic bars in Barbados we could go, but we like Dees Bar. It is what it is, the drinks are cheap, the service is first class. The view is identical to the smarter bars either side, and the welcome is more than friendly. We had a shower or two of liquid sunshine, thankfully only light ones. But we had parasols to shelter under. The rest of the party was about 30 mins behind us, and they confessed they nearly didn’t bother due to the liquid sunshine. But we all agreed it was the best decision to spend our last few hours on the beach. I was somehow cajoled into drinking beer again. I think it was something silly like 4 bottles for $10, hence why they thought I should partake in this form or refreshment. According to the lads it did not taste as good as last week when it was illegal! I love the sea in Barbados. It’s always warm, you can just stroll in and stand around looking back at the beach and the palm trees. Bliss!

But we had to face facts. The cruise was over, like it or not, the cruise was over. We needed to get back to the ship, get showered, put on some fresh clothes. We reluctantly packed up our things for the very last time. I asked Linda, who had looked after us so well keeping the drinks refreshed, to put my sun hat in her bin. But she said she would wear it and remember me.

Back onboard we couldn’t retreat to the suite, instead we had to venture into an inside cabin. It’s been a while since I habited an inside cabin, and I confess I don’t think I could ever go back. It was smaller than the actual bedroom area of the suite. The bathroom was tiny, adequate, but too small for me. I showered, washed my hair, dried and styled it as fast as I could. Then we retreated with our bags to the Glass House. Ooh disembarking people were everywhere, some looked happy, some looked sad. Most were just sitting, not ordering drinks or eating, so we broke the mould. Mr C had a flight of wine and Bison Burger. I had a glass of white and battered fish and chips. I could see the new passengers arriving in coaches through the window. That was us two weeks ago. We kept an eye on the flight departure board and our flight was on time. I stood overlooking the Atrium for a while watching the new passengers arrive and being bombarded by the Spa staff, wine package info, would they like to book for Sindhu? Why can’t P&O just make newly embarked passengers feel welcome rather than hassled?! Personally I would rather be greeted with a friendly welcome onboard,. Can I help? And oh, if they offered a nice cool drink, now wouldn’t that be nice.

We knew our call for our flight was imminent. No point in fighting it. We had to disembark. We made our way down to deck four ahead of the announcement and arrived there just as the call was put out for all those passengers on flight TCX147 to Manchester. That was us! Piff paff puff and we were gone. Old news now. Azura had new passengers to look after.

We were straight onto a coach and on our way to Barbados airport. It was a very busy rush hour, but the driver knew what he was doing. He took a few back roads through streets and villages and we were there pretty swiftly. As soon as I got off the coach someone came over to say Hello that I have known for years. Funny how you meet people in the strangest of places. Well not that strange a place if I think about it. Now the fun begins. Airports do my nut in. Show this bit of paper, show that, show passport, where’s the pink bit of paper? You haven’t signed the blue bit of paper! That bit of stress out of the way and next it was security scanning. In the chaos of packing last night, my makeup bag hadn’t been put in the hold case, so I feared having it all confiscated as I already had my quota of liquids. No, it passed through the scanner completely undetected. Bit worrying! Mr C meanwhile was having trauma. The first security man said he didn’t want laptops out of the case, the second one snapped that he did. Then he wanted Mr C’s crocs and his belt, and his watch. I meanwhile was trying to grab all the stuff coming out the other end of the scanner. Mr C caught up with me but realised he didn’t have his belt, he looked back and could see it was caught just inside the scanner. He reached in to get it but I thought the security guard was going to shoot him. Mr Laidback C had his back up and snapped back at Mr Guard. Ooh dear Calm Down Dear. I tried eyelash fluttering at Mr Ratty Guard and he backed down, but very reluctantly. Executive lounge, get me to the executive lounge. Ahhhh, long cold vodka and coke. Thats better! It was very busy in the lounge today, we struggled to get some seats. Nodody famous kicking around though. After a few nibbles and cakes from the self serve buffet area, a couple of vodkas and a quick change of clothes to something warm and comfy it was time to go to the gate.

So here I am on the plane. Squashed in again like a sardine up against the side of the aircraft. I am not looking forward to this at all. We have a different man sitting on the end of our row, infact, most around us are different, so clearly those that don’t pre book seats are not offered the same seat on the return journey. There is a bit of a kerfuffle at the front of the plane. One man has dropped his boarding pass and it flew off down the runway, so crew need to wait to make sure he is who he says he is and is where he should be etc. Then there is something going on in Premium section. A lady has been allocated a seat next to someone who is taking up a bit too much room and she is not too happy. She had been split up from her husband, and it was clear she wasn’t going to be comfortable for the long flight back. A stewardess came through to economy and asked a couple with a small infant if they would give up babys seat to accommodate the lady? No, they were having non of that. After a bit more tooing and frowing, someone on the front row was moved along a seat and the premium lady came and sat in economy. Ok, can we go now? It was dark, there wasn’t a lot to see, the taxi around the airport seemed to be forever, and eventually we got faster and faster until we were off the ground. Bye bye Barbados!

The cabin crew never seem quite so chirpy on the way back to the UK, wonder if that has anything to do with them not having overnights in Barbados to look forward to? They made a few announcements about food, services, etc, but they might as well have been talking gobbldy gook because I understood non of it. I had a plan, food, ipad tv, sleep. If only they would get on with serving the food my plan might work. Pre dinner drinks arrived first. I chose the pink fizz, but was so long waiting for the dinner that I put it in my bag for a later date. I had a bottle of sprite from the exec lounge which was a far more sensible option. Dinner was ok, not bad for airplane food, but how long did it take to get the rubbish cleared. I bet it was there best part of an hour. They had just got to the front to start serving tea and coffee and turbulence started. Oh my days, it was bad! Like really, rock and roll, shake you up and down bad. And it went on for ages. The pilot came on and apologised but it would be lasting about 45 minutes. Oh great! It was pretty scary! Of course you couldn’t take your seat belt off during that time, couldn’t go the loo. You just had to sit and be shaken. I decided to watch some Junior Doctors on the ipad. Big mistake! I had tuned into an episode where a junior doctor was trying to insert a tube up a patients nose and it was all going very wrong. He was gagging, I was gagging. I had to slam shut the lid and compose myself. Eventually the seat belt sign went off and it all calmed down, but you should have seen the rush for the loos. I needed a cup of tea, but did it come? Did it heck! No instead they served duty free, inflight shop, anything but the tea. The struggle to try and stay awake for a cup of tea was not worth it. I propped my pillow against the side of the aircraft and dozed. I can’t call it sleep. Then I put my ipad back on and watched the rest of the series of Junior Doctors. It was getting light outside. A box containing an orange juice, a yogurt and a bread roll had been delivered. That will be breakfast then! Mr C and his new seat buddy had spotted that Fawlty Towers was on someones inflight TV just infront of them. They both tuned in and laughed in unison at the tops of their voices. The whole plane was turning round to look at them. Clearly at 5.00am in the morning the rest of the passengers on the plane have lost their sense of humour. They are not amused!!

So there it is. Cold, dark miserable Manchester airport. I do not like the look of that at all. Off the plane, through immigration, down to the carousel for baggage and the wait began. How long would the cases take, it seemed like a long time. Always good when you do actually locate your own cases and you know they have got on the same flight as you. In the lift, in the car, blanket over my knees and retrace our tracks to home.

New passengers would be in our suite now. New passengers would be sat at our dining table. No more need for nice dresses and sparkly jewellery. No more need for flip flops, swimsuits or sundresses. It was all over. Filed under memories!

Monday 25th February 2013 – at sea

I was awake at just before 7.30am and nobody had ordered any breakfast. Dam! Breakfast on the balcony it is then. There are worst ways to start the day! Im tiring of XVII because the menu has not changed at all, and although nice, the choice is extremely limited. Be nice if they varied it as they do in Cafe Bordeaux etc. After a wash and freshen up I lay on the sun lounger just watching the wake and generally waking up. I think I might go in search of the sun up on top deck for an hour or two, or then maybe I wont. I like the peace and tranquillity of my own personal space.

Its Caribbean lunch today but I have decided not to go. I’m not a lover of the event. The novelty wore off some years ago. The invite only arrived yesterday. No choice to not attend as in previous times. Just the wording of the invite wound me up – much valued passenger indeed. I don’t think the loyalty manager has even acknowledged we are onboard yet.

We decided to venture right up to deck 19 to just sit quietly for an hour away from the maddening crowd. It was very windy up there and two thirds of the beds were occupied by books, towels and bags, one third by real live people. I came down from there like a coiled spring. So rude and ignorant of people to lay claim to seats and then wander off and do their own thing. It was early so they were either in breakfast or still in bed! Next we tried the ‘Goldfish bowl’. Not a chance in hell of a seat up there. To be fair most of the seats did have people on them and it was lovely and calm with no whirling wind. Decks 15 & 16 around the pools are far to busy for my liking and were windy. So, last resort was the ‘Seal Colony’ just behind The Retreat. Plenty y of loungers all lined up with not an inch of deck space to spare. It was blowing an absolute gale but I only wanted to sit for an hour so I took up residence against the back wall. I battened down my towels with my towel clips and lay there. I actually found the battering from the wind quite therapeutic. Trouble was I didn’t know how much damage the strong wind and sun combination was doing, so we went in after an hour.

The suite had been made up and bed made etc so its always nice to step back into my own private oasis on here. After a bit of work at the laptop we decided on a nice chilled out lunch in Glass House. Fish and chips for me, and surf and turf for Mr C. One glass of wine and I was ready for a lie down. Back on the balcony the sun was blasting through, so I rearranged the sun loungers, grabbed a pillow from the bed and went out like a light. It’s crazy how tiring this cruising lark is! I struggled to wake myself up and knew I had to get out of the sun, so I pottered to the bed and lay there for 30 mins before going back to my sun lounger for another snooze! I told you it was mad didn’t I? Then I needed to muster the energy for a shower so I climbed under the duvet and just rested my little mince pies.

Decided to go out mega early this evening for pre dinner drinks as it was the last formal night. I was in Blue Bar for 10 to 7 and it was rammed. It has been a nightmare trying to get a seat in Blue Bar this cruise. Usually if you go at about 7.30 you can get a table easily enough but we have struggled every time this cruise. I had the delusion that they were possibly all on freedom dining, and that bleepers would all go off at the same time and the place would clear. But it didn’t happen. We were sat right up the back and it was warm. The room just continued to fill and fill, it was mad. A word has been had in someone’s ear and now one can enjoy lovely Mayflower Martinis shaken at the table. They just kept on coming and we somehow managed to be fashionably late for dinner. I don’t know what it is this time, but I am not enjoying my dining experience in the main dining room. The waiter situation doesn’t help, the wine waitress is always in a rush, and the food just isn’t right for me – nothing wrong with it but I think alternative dining is the way forward for me. On the shorter cruises I have ditched the traditional dining and opted more for the alternative restaurants and I think it’s the way forward.

After dinner we managed a waddle to Glass House to sit and chill on a sofa. You can always rely on Glass House to be peaceful, quite and cool. After a bit of frock watching as the theatre emptied we called it a night. It is fab having the suite to go back to and just chill in, but I think I may have mentioned that before!

Tuesday 26th February 2013 – St Vincent

Early start this morning as we are going to Mustique! For those of you that have ever been to St Vincent you will know that it doesn’t have a lot to offer, so we finally took the plunge and booked to go to Mustique as soon as it went on sale. That was purely a fluke, I must have just looked at shore excursions at the right time. Early breakfast up in XVII on the terrace and down on the quay side for 8.30am. A lovely new big boat was waiting to take 25 of us across to Mustique. 25 is the maximum amount of visitors that is allowed per day. I chose to sit inside, well under cover, after the last drowning we got on the boat across to Jost Van Dyke. I wanted to arrive at Mustique looking chic and fresh not like a drown rat in sea water. The tour guide, Laura, advised that it would get rough and not to sit inside. But I don’t get sea sick so why not sit inside. Well, can I just say that if ever you are given that bit of advise you do as the nice tour guide lady suggests. The sea was allegedly calm today, and normally the hour and half crossing is a lot rougher. Well many times we were lower in the sea than the waves above us. What a ride! It was warm, the drone of the engines and the tossing about on the waves had me laying down on a bench. Closing eyes and forgetting about it wasn’t an option. I had to concentrate really hard not to be ill. Then a deck hand offered me his hand and escorted me to the other side of the ship to take in some fresh air. That in itself amused some as I have apparently never been so keen to take a hunky decks hands hand! I talked myself out of being sick as I took in somne fresh air and watched the flying fish alongside us. We stopped by Bequia en route to hear all about that, something about strange hoses and light that shines through them monly twice a year. I really was past caring. Later we saw a boat stuck on the reef that had been there over 12 months, all because he took the wrong course between some rocks.. We slowly glided along the coast of Mustique, after a very rough crossing from Bequi to Mustique, and the lines were tied up. I was laid down, trying to get back to the land of the living, so hadn’t set eyes on Mustique until the lines went on. Oh wow!

Mustique is more than worth the effort and expense to get there. Absolutely stunning! Its tiny, and everything goes at its own pace, but worth every ounce of effort to get there. Laura had arranged for two of the only three taxis to take us on a tour of Mustique. Cost is $10 each and is in open sided vehicles. Fabulous – we saw where Wills and Kate stayed. Where Kate first stayed, where Tommy Hilfiger lived, and all sorts of other rich and famous. The Cotton House Luxury boutique hotel looks like my kind of place! We went across to the other beach on the other side of the island, well two of them in fact, and although the sea was a little rough they were just perfect. After the tour round we went straight to Basils Bar for a cocktail just because it has to be done. 20 EC $ for a cocktail, but we may only be here once. There were only two choices of places to eat. Basils Bar or Lisa’s up the hill which was recommended by Laura. 7 of the 25 of us decided to go up there so Lisa sent cars for us – only on Mustique! OMG, you have to go there, if only for the views! But her hospitality was amazing. She told us what we were having for lunch which was different lol, and she made rum punch to knock your head off. Way to strong for me, so I drank coke! Yes you read that right!! Lunch was a curried chicken dish, some yummy savoury rice, a bit of salad and plantain. Cost including 3 drinks was about $25 each. We had an hour left so we wandered down the hill and straight into the sea. It was oh so hot that we just needed to cool off. So there I was, Mustique, in the sea next to the world famous Basils Bar. Amazing! A fabulous, fabulous day! The boat back to Azura in St Vincent left at 3.15pm and I wasn’t looking forward to the crossing, so I sat out the back, as advised in the fresh air. I was fine this time so must have just needed the fresh air, but oh the sea was rough and many got drenched by the waves. One poor lady did request the bucket, and I felt for her. Its not a nice feeling. Azura in St Vincent was a welcome sight. Lara our guide for the day, had been fab so it was hugs and kisses all round and bye bye from us. Would love to go back to Mustique one day, maybe for a holiday – if we could ever afford one of the hotels!

Back onboard Mr C went for a wander around, no doubt to indulge in some crafty Scooby snacks. I had a Jacuzzi and a shower, put on something nice and comfortable and went and sat on my sun lounger in my own personal space. Mr C returned, having slipped in a crafty beer or two with Brian at the bar. For reasons best known to himself Mr C decided to make himself a cuppa, take off his swimming trunks and start prancing around on the balcony in the all together. He was looking very amused with himself and I had just commented that he would soon have the smile wiped off his face if Deepak came with the canapés. Yes, you guessed it – just as I said it “knock, knock” and Deepak burst through the door (as he does) I leapt off the lounger in an effort to distract Deepak and take the canapés off him. Meanwhile back on the balcony, idiot boy had spilt hot tea down him and was squealing like a girl in an effort to release his drying shorts that I had tied to the back of the chair to dry in an effort to hide his modestly! I dont think I will ever forget the concerned look on Deepaks face as he almost pushed me to one side and went dashing onto the balcony to see what poor Mr C was squealing about. Phew, Mr C had his shorts on. It could have been worse he might have had to slip into my bright pink swimsuit! Mr C blurted out some ridiculous cover story and Deepak decided to be discreet and act like nothing had happened. By which time I was sat on the edge of the sun lounger just waiting to burst. I could hold it no longer and I screeched with laughter. “Sir, Madam, what ever is wrong this evening” I was helpless. I needed oxygen. Poor Deepak he must think we are mental. Again he tried to rectify the situation by offering me a stuffed date. Oh dear. I laugh thinking about it. Oh to be a Butler hey?!

Tonight was the night of the GoCruisewithJane Cocktail Party. Invited guests only, so it was an exclusive little gathering. I knew Deepak would be back soon enough to organise his glasses and drinks and nibbles etc, so I made sure I was ready in plently of time, couldnt afford for any more unfortunate mishaps this evening. Deepak was in control, he knew what he was doing better than I did, so I left him to arrange his coasters, and glasses, his ice buckets and bottles etc. Guests soon started to arrive and I didn’t need to worry about a thing. Deepak was busy encouraging guests to have an hibiscus flower in there champagne, then he was round with the nibbles. He was a star and made sure nobody’s glass was empty. Little sausages in the loaf were a hit, but they always are. Its safe to say that am jolly good time was had by all. Well I enjoyed it and hope to do it again sometime. I hadn’t been watching the time though and we were way too late to go for dinner. Should have started the party earlier maybe?! Some made it to dinner intime, but anyone that knows me, knows that I like to chat. I think the party could have continued all night, but some had work to do which was a shame.

We were just in time to catch the last 10 minutess of the Indian Buffet. Chicken Tikka was rather nice. Looked like it had been busy in there. All we could manage so late at night was a stroll around and a browse of the shops. Back at the suite it was as if the party never happened. Everything in its place, and back to normal. And so some nice chilling time on the balcony. Im not going to be able to do this in a couple of nights time, so I best make the most of it.

Saturday 23rd February 2013 – Curacao

I woke up with a headache today. Even getting a glass of water and some medication was too much of an effort. I decided to roll back over and sleep and when I woke up again it was almost 10.00am. shock horror! A lay in on holiday!! Mr C was up and on the balcony but he hadn’t ordered any breakfast so I went without. I had laundry to do, so I nipped down to D deck to attend to that. Then we went for a wander around and ended up at Aqua Bar catching up with Brian. Oh how I laughed when someone turned the Seascreen on full blast and people shot out of their sunloungers! Well they shouldn’t lay around the sea screen pool should they!

Lunch, I need some lunch, so at noon we went back to the suite to order from the lunch menu. Oh the choice was too much today – chilli, chicken baguette and curly fries, tuna mayo jacket potato, pizza, crab fish cakes – so we ordered all of it! Deepak was obviously on a break because it was a different Butler that turned up and he looked bemused by the large order. He was looking around as if to say how many of you live in here? He didn’t look non too jolly for a Butler full stop. Life looked a tad serious for me. Maybe he was just a bit fed up that he wasn’t ashore with his fellow Butlers. Lunch was rather yummy and I had just the Chilli with a nice glass of chilled white wine from the fridge. Some of you might guess what happened next? Yes, that big bed put out an emergency call for me and I snuggled up under the duvet for an hour or two.

We are dining under the stars this evening in XVII. I have opted for 6.30 dining mainly because you cant physically book a table outside and they are allocated on first come first served basis, so it’s still pot luck that we will get one as they open at 6.00pm. A few of the tables were already occupied when we arrived but we still had a choice of 3 by the rails. I presume some thought it might get a bit blowy if you weren’t under the shelter of the canopy, plus all tables on the rail are tables for two so if there are more of you than that you don’t have a choice. I asked for a champagne cocktail which immediately translated to ‘a cocktail’ which aren’t served there but he could fetch for me. It is one thing I have always found a little odd is that XVII doesn’t have a pre dinner bar and offer signature pre dinner drinks etc. A Kir Royale was settled on and I requested that they give us time to enjoy our drinks as we were in no rush. No, suddenly we had menus, breads, wine menu etc. Even a comment card! Could he bring the amuse bouche?? No!!!! We were chilling. The message got through eventually. I wanted to enjoy the sunset and just chill. It was a lovely sunset, so we were very lucky, just off the starboard aft. Its is weird how quickly it goes from daylight, dusk, to night time once the sun has gone down, and the whole atmosphere changes. I could sort of see why people choose to sit under the canopy for the lighting, but I wasn’t complaining. It was so lovely and warm and I didn’t reach for my wrap once. I cannot fault the food. It was superb. I had the duo of oak smoked salmon, the salt marsh lamb and the crepes. The little cup of tomato soup was just delicious and the mango drink thingy with compliments of the chef was yummy. We rounded it off with coffee and brandy and I sneaked in a couple of Florentines, but really my belly was saying no more! It was a lovely, lovely evening. It was warm and balmy with a very slight breeze just to keep you cool. It might of helped that it was a deck party night so maybe the Commodore was going just a tad slower for the comfort of all. I can highly recommend a meal in XVII. I have been several times and have never been disappointed. Some say the cover charge is a little on the high side, but I personally enjoyed my dining experience, so feel it was worth it. Somehow we waddled out of there some 3 hours after arrival, and I will be honest and say I needed my bed. I couldn’t face a deck party, and wanted to just sit somewhere cool and watch the world go by. We popped our head in Manhattan to see a bit of Annie Lennox tribute. I have seen her several times before and she looked a bit cabaret this time rather than Annie look a likey, but we agreed to come back and see the second show later.

We went along to Glass House, found my comfy sofa, loosened the belt on my dress and chilled. A small can of cola slipped down nicely and then I could sip on my ice cold pellar and enjoy.

Lynn arrived from dinner looking rather squiffy lol thanks to a bottle of red wine with dinner plus some of the non hand shaken tableside cocktails in Blue pre dinner lol. We chatted some more before slowly strolling along to Manhattan for the Annie Lenox tribute. Malabar was packed again and Changez were entertaining. Manhattan was empty, bar stools were available. What ever was going on? Sat at the bar and ordered drinks just as someone announced that the DJ would be down from the deck party soon to continue the party inside. No mention of Annie Lenox. So I asked the waiter. Oh yes madam she was on at 10.30 instead of 11.30 this evening! Thats that then. Maybe I should read the paper or maybe P&O could be a little more consistent – yes, lets blame P&O lol. I left Mr C to enjoy his drink and I went off to bed. I guess he found someone to talk to as he was gone quite a while. When he did arrive he wasn’t quiet. All the lights had to go on, then he had a slice of chocolate birthday cake, then a potter around the bathrooms and of course once in bed he needed the news on to catch up on world affairs. Men!

Sunday 24th February 2013 – Aruba

I love waking up in the sunshine with the occasional beach passing by. We made it upto XVII intime for breakfast outside on the terrace. I had the honey drizzled melon and I tried the eggy bread and crispy bacon but wasn’t keen. Toast was yummy because it was warm. Mr C had fresh squeezed orange juice, strawberry smoothie, full English breakfast and two racks of toast! We had a little potter about after breakfast which included a stroll around deck 8 fwd. Had a good nosey at Mein Scheiff which is berthed infront of us and then ventured back through Glass House for a natter with Al. After that? Well I am just chilling on the balcony with a chilled galss of Veurve! Why? Because its Sunday morning and I can!!! Mr C has seized the opportunity to climb back in bed and watch the news. What is that mans obsession with the news?

We eventually managed to muster the energy to take a stroll ashore. Its a shame it is a Sunday, bad timing P&O, as the majority of the shops were shut and so were many of the bars. Those that were open were doing a roaring trade. Iguana Joes was closed but Mojitos next door was open so we sat in there and chilled. Well if you can chill in this heat. The drinks were good and the Mojitos were amazing, so next time you are there go in and try one. We decided to have a bit of lunch. Nachos and some chicken wings. Never seen nachos like them – bright green, orange and purple! It got very very busy in there so it became time to depart to the tranquillity of the suite. It was so hot on the way back to the ship that we decided a dip in one of Azuras pools might be a good idea. After a quick change we ventured midship to Aqua Pool which was very very hot and sheltered. I needed a bit of a breeze, so then we went forward to Breakers but it was howling an absolute gale round there which was very bizarre. So we ended up aft at the Terrace Pool, sat on the tiered terrace and had a much needed dip in the pool. It was nice out there, still a little too busy for my liking so I retreated down the back stairs to the suite.

After a nice Jacuzzi bath, followed bay a shower to wash my hair, a layering of moisturiser etc I was ready for just a little glass of fizz. Our fridge is fab as it has a never ending supply. I like!

Mr C seemed determined to drag me out early tonight – apparently we are on holiday so we can! Nice chilled glass of Pellar in Glass House and a chat with Al is always a good way to start the evening. It was the Glass House supper club tonight which one day I will get around to partaking in. Very good value for money with 4 courses, wine and coffee included.

7.15pm rendezvous in Planet and it had a bit of a bobble on up there which I have noticed a few times this cruise with having an aft suite. Nothing serious, just a sideways jiggle type movement. We had a very enjoyable couple of pre dinner drinks listening to the duo and singing along where appropriate. And then down to dinner in Peninsular. Our new waiter is starting to niggle me now. I am always either 4th or last to be asked for menu choice or served, little thing but it just niggles me. Why we had to even have a change waiter is beyond me. P&O knew his contract ended half way through our cruise so it makes sense to put him in the other restaurant where the other passengers went home at the same time. Dinner was ok, jerk chicken was not to my liking so an exchange of plates mid course had to take place and I ended up with meatballs. Baileys bread and butter pudding to finish.

Mr C was falling asleep by the end of the meal, he annoys me! Blue bar for drinkies and he was bedded down in his armchair, eyes closed. A couple of swift kicks didn’t wake him up but it made me feel better. I had decided I wanted to go and see the much talked about Fogwell Flax in Manhattan. He has been on numerous cruises over the years but I could never recall seeing him. He is supposed to be hilarious apparently. I thought it was very predictable and not that funny. I smiled a couple of times but thats about it. Some seemed to find him amusing. But to be fair its not very often comedians make me laugh. And so we were in bed shortly after midnight. I think my rant at Mr C about his sleeping habits fell on deaf ears though!

Thursday 21st February 2013 – Barbados Birthday Day!

Oh dear the big Five 0 is upon me! And what better way to celebrate with friends in Barbados on my fave P&O ship!

Pot of tea in bed and opening of cards and presents (friends not present at this point lol). Lots of sparkly things for me today. Champagne breakfast in XVII had been arranged and our table on the terrace awaited. Fizz was on ice and served. Did I really need food or just the fizz? The sun was shining and it was just perfect gloriousness. More pressies and I love everything about my day. The lovely, lovely waitress came to me and gave me the most sincerest of birthday wishes and it totally made my day. She was so absolutely genuine and it was just so sweet of her.

I had researched, and planned very carefully, a special birthday lunch at The Tides Restaurant today but thanks to some stupid law of the day I took the decision to cancel. Government elections meant that the serving and display of all alcohol in Barbados was banned. I was less than impressed! Why did it have to involve the tourists? We weren’t voting! Why did it have to affect our lives? I can sort of understand why the government didn’t want the locals drinking until they had voted, but us? I hope it screwed up the local economy and I hope whoever got elected changes the law for next time. Anyway, a ‘dry’ lunch was not on the cards for my special birthday lunch so we decided to just chill!

No way was I stopping onboard the ship despite alcohol being allowed. The ship had become a embarkation and disembarkation lounge for turnaround day. From what I could see of the ‘departures’ board the first disembarkation from the ship was at 1.45pm. so why were people sat in Malibar and Blue Bar in jumpers, coats and anoraks doing suduko and waiting for transfer coaches to the airport at 10.00am in the morning? The announcements were starting so we needed to go ashore and come back when it was all over.

We decided to walk into town. If ever I tell you on the phone that Bridgetown is just a short stroll away don’t listen to me. I swear they had moved the town and beaches this morning. It was a long hard slog into town. It was hot! One shouldn’t moan but jeeze the beach seemed like miles away today. We eventually made it, into town, over the bridge, down the side of the Honda garage and there it was… the oasis of turquoise sea and fine soft white sand! Just another mile trek along the beach and Dee was there signalling to make use of his sun loungers and parasols. First question of the day was had he got any rum and beer on offer today? Lemonade and fruit punch (wink wink) was all available as per usual. Suddenly all was well with my day! The biggest effort that followed was trecking the few feet from sunlounger to sea and back again. It was hot! Breezy, but hot and the sun was very strong. We had to be vigilant. It was 6 months in clink for breaking the no alcohol law, but we survived undetected despite patrols of the beach. There were a few hawkers about touting paintings, beads, and whatever else the dodgy people sell, but all were polite and moved on quickly. OK, so it wasn’t quite how I envisaged celebrating my birthday, in fact it couldnt have been much further removed, but what was not to love. I was on a beach in Barbados, in the sun with my hubby and bestest friends. We briefly contemplated walking back to Azura but as if by magic Steven the taxi man appeared at our sunlounger from nowhere and $3 each we were back at the ship. The cruise terminal was cool, oh so cool. So cool I felt like lying down and rolling on the floor. The effort to stroll though it was massive. We made it alongside the ship and had to pass through security. Last week the in transit passengers had a separate security queue, today they wanted us to queue with the already processed passengers! P&O need to sort this out. I don’t know why the changeover of passengers has to interfere with the other set so much.

Back onboard the suite was the new oasis of the day. Flowers had arrived, its a day of surprises for me!

A lovely shower, hair done and it was nice to feel refreshed. Invited guests arrived and Deepak found time in his busy day to provide the best ever birthday afternoon tea. Lovely fresh sandwiches, warm scones, fresh brownies, lemon meringues, chocolate éclairs, sponge cake, chocolate chip cookies, jam tarts, clotted cream, jams, and two pots of fresh tea. It was just divine! I do love my balcony. It’s a fantastic entertaining space.

Dusk was falling but I had work to check on, certainly is no rest for the wicked, even on my birthday. Another knock at the door and I called out to come in. A voice called back that they would if they could. Who could it be? It was a delivery of cards and pressies from another bessie back in the UK. How nice of them to send a personal delivery lol. How did todays newly embarked passengers look so much fresher and relaxed than I did this time last week? I couldn’t let them go without a full tour of the suite. I think they like lol.

And so the duvet was calling me, but it was all too brief. There was another knock at the door. This time it was a nervous looking steward with a tray complete with ice bucket, champagne and glasses. When I saw who the card and champers was offmaybe he had every right to be nervous : ))

Casual dress code this evening but it was my birthday so I dressed accordingly. Not that I ever do casual dress code anyway.

We finally made it to Blue Bar for pre dinner drinks, every time we have tried last week it was rammed. The constant arrival announcements for newly embarked passengers were starting to get annoying now. Muster drill was being called. Shops were shutting, bars were closing. Why? I appreciate that safety is of the utmost importance but surely both can operate efficiently alongside each other? I got terribly wound up with he drinks service in Blue this evening! “Shaken and poured at tableside” Martini cocktails were offered in the menu – so I made a point of ordering a Mayflower Martini and requesting it shaken and served tableside in chilled glasses, as per the menu. They arrived ready poured, non chilled glasses and the waiter stood at the opposite side of the table. Stood over Mr C, nearly tipped his Brandy Alexander over his legs and then indicated to me that I needed to get up and take my martini from him when there was more than enough room for him to come and serve me from the side. The martini spilt down my arm. Then I dared to comment that it should be shaken and served at the table? The look I got said it all. ‘Madam they are only words, we do not serve as it states, P&O write the words not us’ well I was paying for it so I would like it served as stated. He made it quite clear that I was being totally awkward and repeated that it was not going to happen either this evening, or any other evening! Well we shall see about that! I don’t think it unreasonable that at almost £10 for two drinks one should receive a bit of service with them! I’m not unreasonable with any member of the crew, so why was he being totally unprofessional with me?

Dinner in Peninsular Restaurant was exclusively for last week’s embarking passengers. So quite why we had to be subjected to the entire safety drill complete with piercing seven short blasts is beyond me. We had a new waiter this evening and a new wine waitress, all very odd and another reason I don’t like the one week turnarounds. Our new waiter isn’t the most jolliest of waiters on the planet! Things are not going well! But the restaurant manger and section waiter did not disappoint. When they promised me the biggest ships Happy Birthday choir they really did mean it. I liked!!! Well done birthday boys! Mr C had ordered the luxury chocolate cake all by himself but not without stress by all accounts. Apparently the fact that the cake was required for the first day of a new cruise had caused logistical nightmares – P&O get a grip! I have had to say that all too often this cruise!!! Reception couldnt take his order for the day in question because it was a turnaround day, so he had to order for the day after turnaround, and then go back to reception once the new cruise updates were installed and amend to turnaround day. Shouldnt that have been P&O’s problem and not Mr C’s? Just as well I wasn’t ordering it myself. Mr C is far to laid back for his own good sometimes.

We had the choice of a deck party, various bars and entertainment venues, but all we could muster was a quite drink in Planet. Its a hard life having a birthday at sea I will have you know.

Back at the suite more champagne had arrived. The cake had been delivered, more birthday cards were on the bed due to another special delivery, an elephant towel animal sat guard. I needed to make space, hang up my dress and put my head on my memory foam pillow!

Friday 22nd February 2013 – at sea

Chillin is the order of the day! Couldn’t even be bothered to get out of bed for some breakfast. Even picking up the phone to Deepak to deliver some breakfast was too much of an effort, so we went without breakfast! Oh how will we survive? Mr C enjoyed his coffee from the coffee machine out on the balcony whilst reading yesterdays printed Daily Express, a suite perk.

I had work to catch up with, a bit of laundry to do, nails to paint, this evenings attire to sort out, and Mr C? Well he had to listen to the news and catch up with world events! What is this mans obsession with the news? He drives me nuts at times. I also needed to sort the suite out. It seems to be full of deliveries of various forms. Birthday cards, opened envelopes, canapés, birthday cake, flowers some of which are past their display dates now, champagne, ice buckets, gift bags, towel animals… yes I need to get straight!

Its hot on the balcony! The sun is shining directly onto it. The sea is blue and the wake is doing its hypnotising thing. The sky is blue and it’s not a bad Friday!

Mr C was glued to Sky News to see the outcome of some lunatics bail hearing and I went on a wander round the ship to see who and what I could see. The decks were rammed. There was sunshine to be had and passengers seemed determined to catch their fare share of it. It just confirms to me that balcony, preferably suite balcony life, is the life for me!

We decided to just chill today so that exactly what we did. We took up residence in Glass House for a couple of hours and caught up with Al, Wine host, who re joined in Barbados yesterday just a little tired and bedraggled. The Glass House seems to be as it should now and all is well with my Glass House world now that Al is back. Mr C enjoyed a flight of Exotic whites and I enjoyed a very nice glass or two of white. We had a trio of starters, disappointed that the king prawns had shrunk considerably but still rather yummy. A little later we had lunch – you will note that we did not take breakfast this morning so we are not making piggies of ourselves. All in all it was a nice chilled out day. And after that? Well that big bed, with soft, yet crisp, white sheets was calling. A few hours later I awoke and had a huge bubble infused Jacuzzi and then just chilled by painting nails, sipping on some chilled wine from the fridge and generally doing not a lot. Deepak has just swung by with beef and asparagus canapés so that was the perfect excuse to lay on a lounger on the balcony and check what the ships wake was doing.

Despite being early for pre dinner drinks we struggled to get into Blue Bar again. It was only 7.15pm and it was packed. By the time 8.00pm ticked by there were people lingering just waiting to pounce on any seat that might become available.

Dinner in Peninsular and if I’m honest it was the first meal I have actually enjoyed in there. Mint and pea soup, turkey roulade, oh yes and then there was desert … profiteroles they were not so good. Seemed a bit overcooked or stale. We had coffee and cointreau to make up for it and were one of the last to leave. We stood for a while watching the ballroom dancing in the Atrium. Bossy dance instructor lady must have got off last Barbados. Mr C went into the Casino for a £10 challenge, watched and assisted by Rodders but they soon came back without a pot of money.

We had a flyby on Malibar but that was its usual busy self, Changez are just too popular, so we continued onto Manhattan and waited for the George Michael tribute act. I will be honest and say that I didn’t feel like I was watching George himself, yet when I watched Robbie last week I did feel I was watching Robbie. This to me was more like a bloke singing George Michael songs. But it was enjoyable and he did get the passengers up and dancing and joining in. We ended up having a late night, a very late night as Mr C kept thinking ‘one for the road’ was a good idea!
